Robin van Persie injury: Striker taken off early for Manchester United

Robin van Persie was withdrawn midway through the first half in Manchester United’s game against Queens Park Rangers, with fears the striker could have picked up a back injury.

Robin van Persie has been withdrawn for Manchester United in the first half of their game against Queens Park Rangers.

The Dutchman has played almost 2800 minutes of football for United without being injured, but it was perhaps always likely to happen eventually. The injury did not seem hugely serious, merely a slight problem with his back, and the decision to withdraw him early could perhaps be a precaution, with the Red Devils enjoying a 1-0 lead and with a Champions League clash against Real Madrid on the horizon. The striker was notoriously injury-prone during his Arsenal tenure, but had not shown any signs of his fragility so far at United.

Danny Welbeck was the man to replace Van Persie, and with United 1-0 up thanks to a stunner from Rafael, they will still be hopeful of a victory without their star striker that will leave them 15 points clear at the top of the table.
