Hamburg walked away from the Westfalenstadion with a 4-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund. The loss is by far the worst suffered by BVB this season.
Borussia Dortmund vs. Hamburg: Final score 1-4, Rudnevs and Son lead Hamburg to huge win
Hamburg moved into fifth place with a massive 4-1 victory away to Borussia Dortmund.
Dortmund went ahead after 17 minutes thanks to Robert Lewandowski. The Poland international beat Hamburg defender Heiko Westermann to a long ball over the top and shot past Rene Adler for the 1-0 lead. The advantage only last a minute. Dennis Aogo crossed the ball into to Artjoms Rudnevs who finished from five yards out to make it 1-1.
The visitors took the lead in the 26th minute. Heung-Min Son beat Mats Hummels before ripping a left footed shot that went in off the far post. A few minutes later, disaster struck for BVB. Lewandowski was sent off for a rash challenge on Per Skjelbred. The momentum was heavily swinging Hamburg’s way, but BVB kept fighting. They thought they equalized just before the half, but Marco Reus was ruled offside.
Jeffrey Bruma decided he would make things fair between the two sides, and the Hamburg defender received a red card in the 59th minute for a foul on Reus.
That did nothing to slow down Hamburg, and they doubled their lead three minutes later. Rudnevs got his head to a cross from Rafael Van der Vaart. It went through Roman Weidenfeller’s legs and into the back of the net for the 3-1 lead.
Not to be outdone by Rudnevs’ brace, Son grabbed one of his own in the 89th minute. The South Korean got on the end of a Marcel Jansen cross and sent it in for the 4-1 final.
Hamburg move into fifth place temporarily with the three points. BVB remain twelve points behind leaders Bayern Munich with the Bavarians set to take on Schalke today.
