It's time for a penalty shootout in Switzerland as the ten men of Tottenham Hotspur held on in extra time against Basel.
Tottenham vs. Basel goes to penalties
A Clint Dempsey brace bookended goals from Mohamed Salah and Aleksandar Dragovic in normal time, before Jan Vertonghen was sent off for a challenge on Marco Streller late on. Yet despite the numerical advantage, Tottenham have held on.
Basel went close a few times, with Mohamed Elneny hitting the post with a 30-yard screamer before in the second half, a phenomenal sliding block from Michael Dawson denied Alexander Frei, whose goalbound shot appeared to have beaten Brad Friedel. Frei had another chance soon afterwards, but could only muster an awkward shot at Friedel with the goal gaping.
The two teams will now have to decide this one on penalties. It’s been a very long road for Spurs, much to their consternation given the tight situation in the Premier League, but a European Semi-Final awaits either side who can prevail from the spot. Let’s see how they do...
Fabian Schar... SCORES. Past Friedel, into bottom corner.
Tom Huddlestone... SAVED. Sommer flies to his right to beat out the effort. Great save.
Marco Streller... SCORES. Basel 2-0 up after Friedel sent the wrong way.
Gylfi Sigurdsson... SCORES. Right down the middle.
Fabien Frei... SCORES. Blasted into the top corner. You don’t save those.
Emmanuel Adebayor... MISSES. I mean, of course he does.
Marcelo Diaz... SCORES! Basel are through to the Europa League semifinal!
