Bayern Munich vs. Juventus, 2013 UEFA Champions League: Half-time score 1-0, Juve get off to disastrous start, but Bayern wasteful

Juventus got off to a disastrous start in the Allianz Arena as they found themselves behind in the first minute of play thanks to two uncharacteristic errors from their veterans.

Andrea Pirlo gave the ball away tamely in midfield, David Alaba let fly with a fairly speculative effort, but Arturo Vidal's attempted block saw the ball take a deflection off the underside of his thigh. Gianluigi Buffon then allowed himself to be deceived as the ball hit the turf before spinning in the opposite direction, landing in the far corner of the net and giving Bayern the lead.

Bayern were on top, although Pirlo went close to making amends for his early error when he blazed a 30-yard free-kick just over the bar, although Manuel Neuer appeared to have it covered.

Bayern then suffered a blow themselves, as Toni Kroos pulled up with what appeared to be a groin strain. Arjen Robben came on with his replacement, with Thomas Mueller moving into the centre.

Robben immediately got himself in on the action as a few minutes after coming on he was presented an excellent opportunity, with Juventus making a terrible clearance which presented the Dutchman with the ball just 12 yards out, but a poor touch was followed up with a shot that was straight at Buffon.

Robben was to have another chance not long afterwards after escaping into the area in space as Juventus' marking fell to pieces, but he lashed his shot wide of the near post to waste another great opportunity for the hosts. Bayern were threatening to run riot, with Franck Ribery looking equally in the mood down the left flank, but after he went on a fine run to cut a low pass into the area for Mario Mandzukic, the Croatian was hauled to the ground by Giorgio Chiellini, only for the referee to wave play on and give the visitors another big slice of luck.

At present, Bayern are looking in a good position, but Juventus are still in a game that they could have been more or less out of sight of already. Nonetheless, the Italians will need to improve to pick up a favourable result.
