A sense of destiny will be shining over Borussia Dortmund as they travel to Malaga as they recall that the last time they won in Spain, they went on to lift the trophy.
Malaga vs. Borussia Dortmund, 2013 UEFA Champions League: Preview and TV Schedule
Two of the dark horses in this year’s Champions League race meet head-to-head as surprise package Malaga face the German champions at La Rosaleda.
The German champions have little left to play for domestically, but will feel they may have enough to go all the way as they did in 1997, when they defeated Atletico Madrid, their only victory ever in Spain. Malaga have showed throughout their Champions League campaign that they are a dangerous opponent, however, so a victory will be hard to obtain.
A few injury doubts will keep Dortmund fans on their toes with regard to the team news ahead of the game, although the spine of their team remains intact and should see the Germans as favourites over the two legs. Yet Malaga’s unpredictable run, the sort which is rarely seen in the Champions League in these times, will give them plenty to think about, and the Spaniards will also have a full-strength lineup at their disposal.
Malaga injuries and suspensions
Out: Eliseu (knee)
Borussia Dortmund injuries and suspensions
In doubt: Marcel Schmelzer (face), Jakub Blaszczykowski (groin), Mats Hummels (ankle)
Eliseu is the only real long-term injury Malaga face, so Antunes will continue at left-back in his stead.
Dortmund face a few doubts, but Marcel Schmelzer should be able to play in a protective mask after taking a kick to the face in his last game. Jakub Blaszczykowski’s groin problem and Mats Hummels’ torn ankle ligaments, however, are more serious - the Poland winger is likely to be on the bench, but Hummels will probably have to sit the game out.
