Deportivo La Coruña moved within a point of Real Zaragoza and more importantly, within a point of escaping the drop zone with a 3-2 win over Zaragoza today. It's Depor's third league victory in a row as they've rocketed from 20th place up to 18th over the past couple weeks.
Deportivo La Coruña vs. Real Zaragoza, 2013 La Liga: Final score 3-2, Depor’s amazing rise continues
Deportivo La Coruña’s hopes of surviving to play in La Liga next season were on life support just a few weeks ago, now after three straight wins they’re a point away from escaping the drop zone.
Depor got things going in the 11th minute when Bruno Gama picked up the ball on the edge of the area and then cut inside and blasted a low shot into the bottom corner past Roberto Gago.
Zaragoza pulled even five minutes later after Depor defender Aythami Artiles was called for a handball in the box, giving the visitors a penalty. Hélder Postiga took the PK for Zaragoza and cooly beat Daniel Aranzubía with a shot to the bottom corner, making it 1-1.
The goals stopped for a bit but the match kept up a ridiculous pace as both side’s relentlessly attacked, looking to take the lead. It was Zaragoza who finally broke through in the 35th minute when Francisco Montañés absolutely robbed Manuel Pablo and advanced on Aranzubía before beating him with a chipped shot over his head.
Right before halftime in the 41st minute, Depor equalized as Pizzi floated a free kick into the Zaragoza box that found Carlos Marchena for a tap-in from close range.
It only took nine minutes in the second half for Depor to get the winner, with a little help from a Zaragoza defender. Abraham Minero tried to deal with a ball towards goal but was only able to turn it into his net, giving Depor a 3-2 lead they would not lose.
Minero’s bad day culminated with a second yellow card and sending off in the 81st minute after a hard foul on Víctor Rodríguez.
