Cristiano Ronaldo has put Real Madrid in front early, and they're in good position to salvage a trophy from an otherwise disappointing season.
Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid: Ronaldo has Los Merengues in the lead early
It took nearly five minutes to get the first shot on the game and when it finally arrived, it was nothing too impressive. Ronaldo's effort from distance took a deflection and popped up into the air forcing Thibaut Courtois to make a catch right on the goal line.
Madrid were fairly aggressive when Atletico were on the ball and it helped lead to the opening goal of the game when Los Merengues earned a corner thanks to a turnover in the midfield that allowed Karim Benzema to break into the Atletico area.
Ronaldo did the damage in the 14th minute off the corner, towering over Diego Godín who appeared stuck in place, and heading the ball to the left side of the goal and past Courtois. Great start for Madrid and a likely big psychological blow for Atletico who will start thinking about their consistent failures against their city rivals.
