Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid: Ronaldo and Özil denied by post and Juanfran

After an exciting end to the first half it appeared that both sides lost their mojo at halftime as the game once against slowed down and lost all the energy we’d seen before the break. Atletico did appear to be the slightly better side in the opening 15 minutes of the half, but things remained tied.

In a near repeat of the first half it took a good five minutes for either team to finally generate a chance. This time it was Atletico through a run down the left wing by Filipe Luis. The chance looked like it would be far more dangerous than it ended up being thanks to Luis scuffing the shot, creating a fairly easily save for Diego Lopez.

Atletico got another chance two minutes later after Sergio Ramos' gave up a free kick in the attacking third. Atleti were ultimately wasteful as a low cross from the right found Miranda in space thanks to some defensive disorganization from Madrid. The defender's effort was poor and Lopez was able to cover up the loose ball.

Mesut Özil caused some trouble on a free kick in the 58th minute as Thibaut Courtois misread the ball and stepped too far off his line before back peddling to touch the ball out for a corner.

Madrid somehow were denied in the 61st minute when Cristiano Ronaldo got onto a loose ball in the center of the Atletico box and hammered a shot off the post. The rebound came right to Özil who sent a second shot in that was cleared off the line by Juanfran.
