Rio Ferdinand signs new one-year deal at Manchester United

Manchester United’s veteran defender Rio Ferdinand has extended his stay at Old Trafford, signing a new one-year deal at the club.

Rio Ferdinand will stay at Manchester United for at least another year after the centre-back signed a one-year deal with the Premier League champions.

There had been rumours that Ferdinand was considering offers from the MLS, but after outgoing boss Sir Alex Ferguson sounded out the veteran to sign a new deal over the course of the season, he will now continue at Old Trafford for at least another season under new manager David Moyes. After Ferguson's retirement, the defender had spoken of his desire to remain at the club, so the move comes as little surprise.

Ferdinand has enjoyed one of his best seasons for the Red Devils in 2012-13, helping the club to a 20th title as they finished top of the league. Ferdinand said on his Twitter account: “Sooooo happy to sign a 1yr extension for this great club, living the dream. Roll on next season.”

Ferdinand, 34, retired from international football last week, so will be committing himself to United full-time. David Moyes is likely to be glad of the new deal, which will help keep stability at the club as they negotiate a potentially difficult transition period.
