Liverpool strengthened their depth in defense on Monday, announcing that they have signed Manchester City defender Kolo Toure on a free transfer. Toure, who signed for Manchester City in 2009, reached the end of his contract this season and was free to sign with any club for no fee this July.

Toure joined City in 2009 as one of the earliest signings of the Sheikh Mansour regime, transferring from Arsenal for £16 million. At the time, Toure was one of England's best defenders, but he started to decline while City started to attract more and more high-quality players. After spending his first season with the club as a lock for the starting XI and his second season with City as a first-team regular, he was relegated to the bench for his final two seasons with the club.
With Toure having just turned 32, it's unlikely that Liverpool see him as a perfect solution to what ails their defense, but he should make for a quality rotation option. Liverpool were lacking in defensive depth even before Jamie Carragher announced his retirement from football.
