The former Manchester City manager will take the helm for next season as he makes a quick return to football after being sacked by Queens Park Rangers earlier in the season.
Hughes has had a mixed career in management, with spells at Blackburn, Fulham and Wales also on his CV, and his appointment was not an entirely popular one with supporters. It is believed that he will oversee a considerable clearout of the Stoke City squad, with heavy transfer activity both in and out of the Britannia Stadium expected this summer.
Hughes was unveiled in a press conference this morning, with chairman Peter Coates stating: “We feel we have made the right choice, a good choice, and I am really looking forward to working with Mark over the next three years.”
Hughes also spoke briefly on his plans, saying: “We want to hit the ground running. We will have a good pre-season, put some good quality work in and hopefully get off on the right tracks. We want to get into the top ten consistently. That is the aim.”
