CONMEBOL 2014 World Cup qualifying: Argentina travel away to Quito
Three points could guarantee Argentina their qualification for next year’s World Cup, with four key CONMEBOL clashes taking place on Tuesday.
4:30 p.m. ET, 3:30 p.m. local
After an eventful goalless draw against Argentina, Colombia are left five points adrift of La Albiceleste in second place. They look almost certain to qualify for the World Cup, and could extend their four-point buffer inside the automatic qualification places with a win. However, Peru won't make life easy, knowing that they could move above Venezuela and into the fifth-place playoff spot with a victory.
Ecuador vs. Argentina
5 p.m. ET, 4 p.m. local
Ecuador have been one of the more surprising teams of the qualification campaign so far, currently sitting pretty in third place. They'll hope to bounce back off a disappointing defeat to Peru on Saturday with a result against Argentina, though Alejandro Sabella's table-toppers have lost only once all campaign, and could guarantee their qualification if they win and Peru and Uruguay fail to do so. They'll hope the altitude won't cause them problems.
Venezuela vs. Uruguay
8 p.m. ET, 7:30 p.m. local
Venezuela are the only CONMEBOL nation to never reach a World Cup finals, though are in with a chance this time. Currently sitting in a playoff spot, they’ll look to maximize their home advantage and take points from a Uruguay side that haven’t won their last six qualification games, and for whom qualification is at serious risk. Three points adrift of the playoffs, Óscar Tabárez’s side are in dire need of three points.
Chile vs. Bolivia
8:30 p.m. ET & local
Chile have been one of the more unpredictable teams in CONMEBOL of late, having won six and lost six of their 12 games so far. Currently with a two-point advantage inside the automatic qualification spots, they’ll be looking for a win against Bolivia, who’ve won only twice throughout their qualification campaign so far. For La Verde, the World Cup is an extremely distant dream.
