Gerardo Pelusso fired by Paraguay

Paraguay have fired their manager for the second time in a year as they stumble through the post-Gerardo Martino era.

Paraguay are set to appoint their third manager since the end of the 2011 Copa America after another coach failed to even approach the achievements of previous manager Gerardo Martino. Just one year after sacking Francisco Arce, the Paraguayan FA have fired his replacement Gerardo Pelusso.

Pelusso has been in charge for six World Cup qualifiers, winning one, drawing one and losing four. Paraguay's form appeared to be turning around with their good results in Matchdays 10 and 11, when they defeated Peru at home and drew away to Uruguay, but they were very poor in their 4-1 loss to Ecuador on Friday.

Paraguay currently sit on eight points through 12 games in CONMEBOL qualifying, eight points behind Venezuela, who sit in the World Cup playoff spot. They will need to win all four of their remaining fixtures to have any realistic chance of finishing in the top five.

Because Paraguay are the only team with a bye during Tuesday’s fixtures, the gap between them and a World Cup place is likely to get even bigger before their next match. Paraguay’s next qualifier is a home match against Bolivia on September 6.
