Bernd Schuster takes charge at Málaga

Málaga have announced that Bernd Schuster will be their new manager, replacing the outgoing Manuel Pellegrini at La Rosaleda.

A statement on Málaga’s website declared that the club “trusts the German coach to develop a sound long-term project,” with Bernd Schuster appointed on a lengthy five-year contract. It is the 53-year-old’s first job in management since 2011, when he resigned as manager of Turkish club Beşiktaş.

He's a familiar face in Spain, having played at Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid before gaining extensive experience at four Spanish clubs as a manager. He notably impressed at Getafe, leading them in their most successful season ever before being given the Real Madrid job and going on to win La Liga in 2008.

Schuster will have a tough job living up to the work of the outgoing Manuel Pellegrini, who led the club to sixth place and the quarter-final of the Champions League last season. Pellegrini’s move to Manchester City could be quickened by the Schuster appointment, with confirmation being delayed while a problem surrounding unpaid wages is resolved with the blanquiazul.
