Following three highly successful seasons at Malaga, Manuel Pellegrini has been appointed as the new manager of Manchester City. Pellegrini had been linked to the job during the season and his move was all but confirmed when he left Malaga at the end of the season. Two weeks later, City have finally made an official announcement that he will take over their managerial vacancy.

After months of rumors, Manchester City officially appointed former Malaga manager Manuel Pelligrini as their new boss.

A highly successful manager across South America, Pellegrini first made his mark on European football with Spanish club Villarreal. He took over in 2004 and guided the historically second-tier club to the semifinals of the 2005-06 UEFA Champions League. He was hired by Real Madrid in 2009, but was fired after one season despite finishing on 96 points in La Liga because of his failure to win a trophy.
Pellegrini moved on to Malaga after that and managed to get them into the Champions League despite the club’s financial issues. Owner and chairman Sheikh Abdullah promised to make Malaga into a giant and spent lavishly on players initially, but quickly withdrew part of his financial support and sold multiple players. Malaga is currently facing a suspension from European competitions due to UEFA sanctions, so it comes as no surprise that Pellegrini decided to leave for a bigger job.
Manchester City has already made a splash in the transfer market, spending big on midfielders Jesus Navas and Fernandinho before announcing Pellegrini’s appointment. The Chilean is expected to re-shape the squad considerably and sell multiple players.
