Liverpool have opted to get younger at the goalkeeper position, signing Belgian international Simon Mignolet from Sunderland. Despite Sunderland's struggles to stay afloat in the Premier League last season, Mignolet was brilliant between the sticks and arguably the biggest factor in their success in staying up.

The 25-year-old moved from Belgian side Sint-Truiden to Wearside in 2010 for a reported fee of £2m. He eased into a starting role in his first season before becoming first choice in his second year at the Stadium of Light. During the 2012-13 Premier League season, Mignolet played in all 38 league fixtures for his club. The transfer fee for his move to Liverpool has not been disclosed, but the Black Cats likely made a very sizable profit on his sale.

This likely marks the end of ‘Pepe’ Jose Reina’s run as first-choice goalkeeper at Anfield. After spending the better part of a decade as one of the Premier League’s best keepers, Reina struggled last season. He’s 30 years old, so still young enough in goalkeeper years that Liverpool can fetch a decent fee for him. Barcelona have been rumored to be interested, and if their interest is genuine, the Reds might end up receiving more for him than they paid for his replacement.
