How Fred went from being a sold, but unspectacular striker at Olympique Lyonnais to being a key player for the Brazilian national team is anyone's guess, but he's on fire and has locked down his starting center forward position. He's now netted eight goals in his last 10 games in a Brazil shirt, including his team's first goal in their Confederations Cup semifinal against Uruguay, putting them up 1-0 in the first half.
Fred scores to put Brazil up on Uruguay
The entire move was brilliant, with Paulinho playing a ball over the top of the Uruguay defense to Neymar, down the left side of the penalty area. Fernando Muslera charged out at him and appeared to get a piece of his chip across the box, but not enough to stop it from falling to Fred. His shot was slightly mishit, but in a way that made it impossible to clear off the line.
It’s going to be tough for Uruguay to come back from this. They’ve been playing a very defensive game because their defenders simply aren’t good enough to compete with Brazil while taking any risks going forward. The Uruguayan strikers can make goals from nothing, but they might have trouble getting the ball in the second half.
