Spain vs. Italy, 2013 Confederations Cup: Headed to a penalty shootout

Update: Spain 0-0 (7-6) Italy, final score - Match report

The heat and humidity in Fortaleza has taken its toll on Spain and Italy. The two teams played a fast and lively first half, with both teams counter attacking at pace, but the second half was a completely different story. Extra time wasn't much better, and penalties are required after a 0-0 draw.

Spain had the much better opportunities to score in extra time, regularly failing to convert decent half-chances with horrible shooting. Italy got close on one occasion, in the 93rd minute, with Emanuele Giaccherini hitting the post on a cross by Antonio Candreva. In 115th minute, Gianluigi Buffon deflected a shot by Xavi onto the post.

These two teams went to penalties in their Euro 2008 quarterfinal, with Spain coming out victorious, 4-2. Both of the goalkeepers playing in this match -- Iker Casillas and Gianluigi Buffon -- were between the sticks in that game. Daniele De Rossi is the only player on the pitch who missed a penalty on that day.

We’ll update the penalty kicks as they happen below. Hit refresh on this post and you’ll see the results of the penalties right here. After the shootout ends, we’ll link our full game recap.
