Borussia Dortmund extend Kuba’s contract

Friedemann Vogel

Borussia Dortmund might have lost Mario Gotze this summer, but they've locked up another important player by re-signing Jakub 'Kuba' Blaszczykowski to a long-term contract. The winger, 27, will spend another five years at the club as they hope to recover from the twin blows of being demolished in the league by Bayern Munich and losing the Champions League final last month, but it's difficult to see Kuba signing for the long run as an antidote to the problems that are ailing the club.

The simple fact of the matter is that, Mats Hummels aside, BVB have yet to extend any of their really key players. Kuba’s a good, solid winner, but he’s not the sort of player who’ll keep them in the upper echelons of the game. Yes, he’s been around for a while, but that’s no substitute for pure quality. Unless Dortmund announce new contracts for the likes of Marco Reus, Ilkay Gundogan and Neven Subotic, they’ll always be seen as a selling club -- an unfortunate fate for a side that’s won two Bundesliga titles in the last three seasons.
