Leonardo resigns from Paris Saint-Germain position

Paris Saint-Germain have announced that Leonardo is to step down from his position as sporting director at the end of the transfer window.

Leonardo is to step down from his position as sporting director at Paris Saint-Germain when the transfer window ends, the Ligue 1 club have announced.

The Brazilian would have been banned for the entire upcoming season after he saw his appeal against a ban for pushing a referee rejected.

The move comes as controversy shrouds one of his purchases, Thiago Silva, who has been linked to Barcelona in the transfer window, but it appears the two are unrelated. Silva had reportedly agreed a deal with Barca to move, but these claims have now been rejected by the player.

A statement from PSG said: “We regret his choice but respect his decision. We thank him greatly for his important contributions towards the project of building a top European Club in Paris and wish him all the best.”

Leonardo had overseen the new regime at PSG, bringing in a host of top talent from around Europe including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Javier Pastore and Lucas Moura. He also had a brief spell in charge of AC Milan, and may now look to find another managerial role.
