Interim manager Colin Miller has been put into a tough spot, trying to bridge the underachieving Canadians between their 8-1 loss to Honduras and the beginning of Floro's reign, and things have gone about as poorly as they possibly could. Canada almost certainly had ambitions to make the Gold Cup knockout stage, but a loss to Martinique in the opening game has put that very much in doubt.
They meed something approaching a miracle on Thursday night, but it just might come. As disappointing as Canada have been over the last year, Mexico have disappointed even more. While they did bring a B-team to the Gold Cup, they have arguably the most talent in the tournament and were thoroughly outplayed by Panama in their opening game. The loss was just the latest in a string of very poor results for Mexico, who have only put in one very good performance -- their win over Japan at Confederations Cup -- in 2013.
Under normal circumstances, Mexico would beat Canada by one or two goals in a well-played and competitive match. These are not normal circumstances, and no result in this game should be considered shocking.
