Edinson Cavani joins Paris Saint-Germain

Uruguay centre forward Edinson Cavani has joined Paris Saint-Germain from Napoli. The price? A cool €63 million plus 10 million euros a year in wages.

Paris Saint-Germain have announced the capture of Edinson Cavani from Napoli in the summer’s biggest transfer to date.

Cavani, the top striker in Italy last season, cost the Parisians €63 million plus wages, and although the rumours have been swirling around this move for weeks, it’s still something of a surprise when one considers who was supposed to be in the hunt for Cavani at the start of summer -- PSG have beaten off competition from teams as illustrious as Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea to land the Uruguayan on a five-year contract worth a rumoured 10 million euros per year.

That they’re paying through the nose for him is a reasonable explanation as to how, but it’s clear that the folks at the Parc des Princes are operating on an entirely different wavelength than most of the rest of Europe. If you have infinite funds and decide to ignore Financial Fair Play, paying a ridiculous amount of money to land one of continent’s top players in the game seems like a perfectly reasonable investment.

Ligue 1 now boasts three of the best centre forwards in Europe, with Cavani adding to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, already at PSG, and Monaco’s Radamel Falcao. Quite what the Cavani acquisition means for Ibrahimovic remains to be seen, although there are more than a few hints that he’s already agitating for a move away.
