The shocking news of the death of Ecuadorian striker Christian “Chucho” Benitez hit the soccer world hard this morning. While there was some initial confusion as to the circumstances surrounding Chucho’s passing, more details are starting to come out as to what exactly happened to the 27-year-old.
Christian Benitez’s cause of death was ‘cardio respiratory arrest’, say Ecuador FA
According to a report posted on the Ecuadorian FA website, Christian “Chucho” Benitez died of cardio respiratory arrest in Qatar a few hours after being rushed to the hospital with stomach problems.
According to a report on the official website of the Ecuador FA, Benitez was rushed to a hospital in Qatar, complaining of severe stomach pains. Several hours later he suffered cardio respiratory arrest and medical workers were unable to save his life.
Benitez had only recently arrived in Qatar after leaving Club America to sign with El Jaish SC of the Qatar Stars League.
There’s still no official connection being made but this claim, along with statements made by representatives of Benitez’s family, line up with earlier reports of the striker’s death as stemming from complications of appendicitis. The family appears to be claiming that Benitez was not given medical attention fast enough, allowing for the initial situation to escalate.
Whatever the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, we’re left with the sad truth that a talented player and young man has lost his life far too early.
