Steven Caulker joins Cardiff City from Tottenham

Ian Walton

Cardiff City have secured the signing of young England centre back Steven Caulker from Tottenham Hotspur on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee. Caulker, 21, is considered one of the top defensive prospects in England and had established himself as a regular at White Hart Lane -- he'll certainly help the Bluebirds as they seek to establish themselves in the Premier League next season.

As for Spurs, it's difficult to comprehend just what they're up to at the moment. Although they appeared to be in for Steaua Bucharest's Vlad Chiriches, that deal sounds like it's having problems, and there's no reason to ditch Caulker just because they're bringing in another centre half. Younes Kaboul's return from injury will soften the blow, of course, but it's still hard to imagine the motivation behind selling a talented young player.

Not that we should assume that there was no good reason to sell -- Daniel Levy is a shrewd player in the transfer market, hilarious striker blind spot aside, and thinking he’s an idiot is probably an excellent way to go wrong. That said, although his thought process here is surely rational, it’s very much hidden.

For Caulker, it'll be his second stint in Wales. He was sent on loan to Swansea City for the 2011/12 season, making 26 Premier League starts, mostly alongside Ashley Williams as a centre back. That he did so in a campaign he began as a player raised some eyebrows -- now Cardiff are the beneficiaries.
