Cameroon go top of group after Togo found to have fielded ineligible player

Cameroon’s 2-0 defeat against Togo has become a 3-0 victory by default after Togo were found to have fielded an ineligible player.

Togo's 2-0 victory over Cameroon has become a 3-0 defeat by default after the Togolese were found to have fielded an ineligible player.

The result now puts Cameroon at the top of Group I in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, ahead of Libya. The move comes after Togo fielded Jacques Alexys Romao, who ought to have been suspended for the game in which he took part.

FIFA declared: “The match is declared to be forfeited and awarded 3-0 in favour of Cameroon, with the TFF also receiving a fine of CHF 6,000.”

While Togo are being punished for their own foolishness, Libya certainly won’t be happy - the team were making remarkable progress to top their group, but this result has changed the complexion of Group I, and now sees Cameroon sitting above the Libyans in the top spot as favourites to progress.

Intriguingly, the remaining decisive game is between Cameroon and Libya, which will give the North Africans one last chance to seal their progress to the playoff stages.
