Eric Abidal signs with AS Monaco on a free transfer

After being released by Barcelona at the end of the season, defender Eric Abidal has returned to the club where his professional career began back in 2000.

Former Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has joined AS Monaco on a free transfer, joining the Ligue 1 club for the second time in his career. Abidal began his professional career with Monaco in 2000, spending two seasons with the club before moving on to Lille and then Lyon. Abidal left France in 2007 and joined Barcelona where he played until his release at the end of last season.

The 33-year-old defender, who overcame a liver transplant last year to return to play, signed a one-year contract with Monaco that includes a club option for a second season.

Abidal joins signings Radamel Falcao, Ricardo Carvalho, Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez as Monaco's spending spree continues after earning promotion back to Ligue 1.

Just for fun, let’s go back one week and remember what Abidal’s agent David Venditelli told L’Equipe about Monaco...

[Insert fancy flashback music]

“I no longer have any news from Monaco, the way they handled the case is disturbing, and was up to the limit of being disrespectful. Monaco had the opportunity to show that they were not just a club interested in money by taking a free player. They did not do so. I respect their sporting choice of not going for Eric Abidal. What I do not accept is the way people are treated.”

Let it be said that when it comes to making money, there are few issues that can’t be overcome.
