Crystal Palace sign Marouane Chamakh

Marouane Chamakh is moving across London.

Steve Bardens

Marouane Chamakh has joined Crystal Palace on a one-year deal. The striker was available on a free transfer after a disappointing spell at Arsenal and chose to stay in the Premier League with the newly promoted Eagles.

The 29-year old Moroccan scored just 14 times in three seasons with Arsenal and didn’t make a single league appearance for the Gunners in 2012-13. He was loaned out to West Ham for the second half of the season, but only played in three matches there.

Crystal Palace will have to hope that Ian Holloway can get Chamakh to play like he did in an eight-year stay at Bordeaux, where he scored 76 goals and 16 in each of his final two seasons in Ligue 1. Holloway thinks he can do it too.

"It’s about him getting going again and I normally do all right with people whose careers are faltering" Holloway, who told the Mail. "I wouldn’t fancy being Robin van Persie’s understudy. It couldn’t have been fun."

Chamakh will be hoping he can revive his career too because he’s lost his place in the Morocco team. He was left out of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations because he wasn’t playing enough for his clubs. Selhurst Park may now provide the setting for his return to the field, and Morocco.
