Sydney FC pick up Richard Garcia

One of the top unsigned players from the 2012/13 A-League season has chosen Sky Blue for the upcoming season.

Richard Garcia has chosen to continue his A-League tenure in Sydney rather than Melbourne or Perth. Sydney FC today announced his signing of a one-year contract to join the Sky Blues when the club returns from its Italian tour.

Back on July 1, we wondered if Garcia might end up with Perth Glory, given his Western Australia background and the fact that it seemed like Melbourne Heart were unlikely to re-sign one of their best players from the 2012/13 campaign. While Heart held up their end, having already signed Harry Kewell, and adding Aziz Behich and Orlando Engelaar to an increasingly crowded midfield, Perth chose a more youthful route, signing the likes of Ryan Edwards, Sidnei Sciola and Jamie Maclaren.

The 31-year-old, who will be 32 before the season begins, expressed excitement to be joining a potentially dynamic front line in Sydney, according to a club press release:

”I’m thrilled to be joining Sydney FC. Sydney FC is a big club with big expectations and that’s something I thrive on. To be playing alongside players like Alessandro Del Piero, Brett Emerton and Nick Carle will be a fantastic experience for me and something I’m very much looking forward to.

“I can’t wait to start pre-season training with the team and I look forward to working hard with the rest of the boys to win a spot and then helping Sydney FC push for success this season.”

Manager Frank Farina added:

“He did well last year in the A-League and he fits in with what we are trying to implement and achieve at Sydney FC this season. Richie is a leader and a winner on and off the pitch and they are important ingredients when looking at who we bring to Sydney FC. He can play as a striker or a midfielder and I think he will suit our style of game just perfectly.”
