DFB-Pokal 2013-14 first round: The German football season gets underway

64 teams, 32 matches and the treble winners vs. a fourth division club. That is how the German football season begins.

The German football season gets underway this season, not with the Bundesliga or lower divisions, but with the DFB Pokal. Everyone from Bayern Munich to the regional association clubs get in on the action for the first round with 32 matches over four days.

Most of the matches are Saturday and Sunday, which is also when most of the Bundesliga clubs play. Borussia Dortmund begin their season against SV Wilhelmshaven on Saturday, the same day that Bayern Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Mainz and Hoffenheim all play their matches as well.

Bayern Munich wrap up the round with a Monday contest against BSV Schwarz-Weib Rehden, a club whose stadium holds 4,350 people, only 350 of those seated. That is how Bayern will kick off their treble defense.
