DFB Pokal, Round 1: Bayern Munich and Schalke advance on the final day

The first round of the DFB Pokal is completed with Bayern Munich and Schalke grabbing wins.

Jahn Regensburg 1 - 2 Union Berlin

Regensburg jumped out to an early 1-0 in the 19th minute on the foot of Abdenour Amachaibou. He received a pass in the box from Jim-Patrick Müller and beat Daniel Haas. Unfortunately for Regensburg, Union came right back down the field just two minutes later and grabbed an equalizer from Soren Brandy’s shot. Brandy went from scorer to provider in the 42nd minute. His cross was headed in by Benjamin Köhler and Union would hold on throughout the second half to advance.

MSV Duisburg 2 - 3 SC Paderborn

They may have been relegated from the 2.Bundesliga for not getting their license together in time, but Duisburg came out fired up for the match. They jumped into a lead in the 31st minute. Kevin Wolze laid the ball back to Michael Gardawski who hit the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Their advantage was short lived. Paderborn took the lead in the 37th and 38th minutes with goals from Daniel Brückner and Rick ten Voorde. Duisburg controlled the match but struggled to find the equalizer. The next goal came in the 80th minute, but it was once again from Paderborn. Jens Wemmer grabbe another goal in the 80th minute to make it 3-1. Filip Orsula pulled one back for Duisburg in stoppage time, but it was not to be on the day.

Nöttingen 0 - 2 Schalke

The hosts were holding on well for the first half hour of the match, causing Schalke problems. Schalke continued attacking, but they couldn’t figure out how to finish after breaking down the Nöttingen defense. However, in the 30th minute, Christian Fuchs crossed the ball into the area, and Klaas Jan Huntelaar got onto the end of it. The Dutch forward shot the ball into the back of the net to give Schalke the lead. Nöttingen remarkably held on for the remaining hour of game time. Finally, in the final minutes of the match, Leon Goretzka opened his Schalke account to put the match away.

BSV Schwarz-Weiß Rehden 0 - 5 Bayern Munich

Pep Guardiola gave Franck Ribery, Philipp Lahm, and Jerome Boateng the night off from starting with the first Bundesliga match Friday. Rehden didn't back down from Bayern on the day, but they were overwhelmed early and often. The Bavarians would go on to to win 5-0 with a hat trick from Thomas Müller along with goals from Xherdan Shaqiri and Arjen Robben. The win is Pep's first for Bayern in his first competitive match.
