DFB Pokal 2013-14, First Round, Day 1: No big upsets as 1860 Munich, Augsburg, and Osnabrück advance

There were no big upsets on day one of the DFB Pokal as the favorites all won.

RB Leipzig 0 - 2 Augsburg

Augsburg jumped out a very quick lead with a goal after only five minutes. Raphael Holzhauser, on loan from Stuttgart, sent in a corner kick and Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker jumped above everyone and headed it into the back of the net for the early lead. The match morphed into a really strong midfield battle, while Leipzig were content to settle back and counter. Leipzig kept fighting in the second half but were unable to break down the Augsburg defense. The hosts finally slipped and conceded their second. Jan Moravek played a cross in to Halil Altintop who slotted it past Fabio Coltorti for the 2-0 advantage. Augsburg played out the remainder of the game an advanced in the tournament.

Heidenheim 1 (3) - (4) 1 1860 Munich

We didn’t get past the first day of the Pokal before a match went to penalties this year. It took a little while, but 1860 finally began to grab control of the match and exert their will; however, goals were hard to come by for them. Benjamin Lauth spearheaded the 1860 attack, but Rouven Sattelmaier was up to the challenge in the Heidenheim goal. 1860 grabbed the advantage just after the start of the second half. Bobby Wood laid a great cross into Moritz Stoppelkamp, and the midfielder tapped it over the line for the 1-0 lead. As the match wore on, Heidenheim threw everything forward looking for a tying goal. It was in stoppage time, but they found it. Tim Göhlert converted Marc Schnatterer’s corner, and the match went to extra time and penalties, where 1860 found a way to advance.

Osnabrück 3 - 0 Erzgebirge Aue

The hosts struck fast and with Daniel Nagy grabbing an early goal off a pass from Timo Staffeldt. For all of their possession, by the end of the match it was nearly 70%, Erzgebirge couldn’t figure out what to do with the ball. Andreas Spann doubled the lead and made it 2-0 in the 21st minute, with a well placed shot from the middle of the box. Nagy would add at third halfway through the second half, as the 3.Liga side moved on to the second round.
