Vincent Kompany injury: Manchester City defender out 3 weeks

After picking up a groin injury against Newcastle, Manchester City captain and central defender Vincent Kompany will miss a few games.

Manchester City is going to be without their captain and arguably their best player until September, at the very least. Vincent Kompany came off injured in the second half of City's season opener against Newcastle on Monday and will miss approximately three weeks with a groin problem, according to The Guardian.

Kompany was not able to have an MRI on Tuesday, so his current prognosis is merely an estimation. At some point in the next few days, he should be able to have a scan to determine the exact extent of his injury.

City plays Manchester United on Sept. 22, which would be a reasonable target return date for Kompany if his scan doesn't reveal that his injury is much worse than first feared. In his absence, defensive midfielder Javi Garcia will likely drop back alongside Joleon Lescott to fill in at central defense. Young star defender Matija Nastasić is nearing fitness after suffering an injury in preseason, but is unlikely to be fit for City's game against Cardiff on Sunday.
