Two games today in Spain as the second week of league play kicked off. Enjoy a recap of the action.
La Liga Wrap: Athletic downs Osasuna, Almeria blows another lead
For the second straight match Almeria blew a second half lead but this time they at least managed to get a point. Atheltic Bilbao dispatched Osasuna to go top of the table for the moment.
Getafe 2-2 Almeria
An 85th minute penalty from Diego Castro Gimenez helped Getafe salvage a 2-2 draw and deny Almeria their first La Liga victory since 2010. It’s the second straight league match in which Almeria have blown a lead.
Almeria went into the lead in the 30th mminute when Rodri finished off Suso’s effort that had bounced off the post and right to the striker. Getafe evened the match just two minutes later thanks to Angel Lafita, but Almeria answered back five minutes later when Fernando Soriano scored off a rebound.
The visitors were five minutes from victory when Rafael Ramos fouled Angel Lafita inside the area, giving Getafe a lifeline that Castro used to earn Getafe a draw.
It was not a flashy performance from Athletic but it was their second straight win to open the season, moving Los Leones to the top of the table...at least for today.
Athletic had their chances early and finally broke through at the half hour mark with a little help from the dreaded own-goal. The attack started with a great long ball down the right to Markel Susaeta who was in full stride and raced into the Osasuna area. Susaeta’s cross in the box was met by Alejandro Arribas who tried to kock it wide with a sliding tackle but instead directed the ball past his own keeper.
Osasuna pushed forward for most of the second half but couldn’t fine the equalizer. Finally in the 81st minute, all the space at the back was exploited by Athletic as Oscar de Marcos scored to ice the game.
