English League Cup recap: Aston Villa, Newcastle, Cardiff and Everton advance

There were no big upsets today as all four Premier League sides advanced to the third round. Everton got a bit of a scare though from Stevenage who pushed them into extra time.

Aston Villa were superb in the 3-0 thumping of Rotherham United with goals from Andreas Weimann, Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph.

Fellow Premier League sides Newcastle United were unimpressive for most of their match against Morecambe but two late goals from Shola Ameobi and Sammy Ameobi ensured the Magpies advanced to the third round.

Everton survived a scare against Stevenage thanks to a goal late in extra time from Marouane Fellaini.

Here’s all the result from Wednesday’s second round matches:

Accrington Stanley 0-2 Cardiff City

Aston Villa 3-0 Rotherham United

Everton 2-1 aet Stevenage

Morecambe 0-2 Newcastle United

Nottingham Forest 2-1 aet Millwall

Stoke City 3-1 Walsall

Watford 2-0 AFC Bournemouth
