According to a report on The World Game, Sydney FC are lining up defender Nikola Petković as a late offseason signing. The 27-year-old Serbian has been under contract with Gençlerbirliği of the Turkish Süper Lig, Eintracht Frankfurt of the Bundesliga and Red Star Belgrade of the Serbian SuperLiga since 2007, while leaving those clubs on loan five different times. A 6’1” left back, Petković is expected to be an injury replacement for Terry Antonis, who will be out until at least Christmas.

With Terry Antonis out until at least Christmas, Frank Farina will have cover in the form of Petković, the 27-year-old Serbian defender.

Sydney CEO Terry Pignata told The World Game:
“There is a bit of red tape to get past yet and it’s a short-term deal which will run for around 16 weeks. We are keen to get this across the line and [Petković] should be with until January time if things go well.”
Assuming a short-term visa can be captured in the coming days, Petković could join the club this month as the 2013/14 season kicks off in just 30 days. While Petković has hardly played regularly in recent years, the Sky Blues could use depth at left back alongside Marc Warren and Daniel Petkovski.
