Uruguay did the Albiceleste no favors with their win earlier in the day, but Argentina pulled off a big away win on Tuesday to qualify for the World Cup without any outside help. Their 5-2 victory over Paraguay put them top of the table in CONMEBOL and made them the first team from South America to qualify for the finals.

After opening CONMEBOL qualifying with 4-1 demolition of Chile, Argentina stumbled with a loss against Venezuela and a draw against Bolivia. La Albiceleste quickly recovered though, reeling off nine straight victories including impressive defeats of Uruguay and Ecuador. Argentina slowed down a bit towards the end of the qualifying with three straight draws, but they still had more than enough to claim a spot in next summer's World Cup.
Since failing to qualify for the 1970 World Cup, Argentina have qualified for each subsequent tournament and won it twice in 1978 and 1986.
