adidas flips the switch on a classic, announces white Copa Mundial boot
A classic boot renowned for its traditional styling is about to undergo a big change. The adidas Copa Mundial has been inverted, stepping away from its famous black upper and going with a bright white look.
According to adidas, the Copa Mundial, released in 1982, is the best-selling boot in soccer history. It has seen some very famous wears in its day including Franz Beckenbauer, Michel Platini, Zico, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, (personal favorite) Jussi Jaaskelainen, and many, many more. To date, more than 10 million pairs have been sold and, according to the press release from the sportswear giant, it was "the last revolutionary product innovation created by sporting goods legend and founder of the adidas brand Adi Dassler. He had been personally involved in the early development of the original Copa Mundial before he passed away in 1978."
Throughout those 30+ years, the boot has remained a constant with its white outsole, black upper, fold-down tongue, and three distinctive white stripes running up either side of the foot. The only real change that it’s seen came in 2007 when adidas released a special edition version to celebrate the boot’s 25th anniversary. That one came in a special case with some minor gold detailing changes on the boot (on the side and on the tongue). Apart from that, the Copa has been largely untouched and rightfully so.
That’s about to completely change with adidas releasing what is perhaps the largest change to the boot yet. Yes, the classic black that has defined the Copa Mundial is about to completely switch to a stark white in a new limited edition version of the boot.
The new look is definitely a massive departure, boasting an all-white upper while retaining the white sole plate and black studs. The three stripes have also been inverted, going full black, with black detailing on the boot’s tongue.
