Whitecaps pick Christian Dean third in 2014 MLS Draft

Vancouver took a chance on Christian Dean’s high ceiling.

GoldenBearSports.com

The Vancouver Whitecaps selected Christian Dean with the third of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, giving them arguably the most talented player in the draft. The centerback from California was in contention for the top pick and the Whitecaps will be happy to get him at the No. 3.

Dean is not the most MLS ready player, but at 6’3” with good strength and fantastic athleticism, many have pegged him as a dominant centerback for the future. That he’s left-footed with a Generation adidas contract only makes him more enticing and by the time it’s all over, he may prove to be the best player in this draft.

There was some concern about Dean in recent weeks, especially after he struggled some at the MLS Combine, but in the end, his potential was just too tantalizing to pass up. It may take a year or two for Dean to add some strength, refine his skill and improve his reading of the game, but he’s considered a bright and hard working kid who should make that progress. Once he does, watch out.
