Revolution pick Steve Neumann with No. 4 pick in 2014 MLS Draft

New England traded the No. 4 pick, then pulled the plug at the last minute to pick Steve Neumann.

Georgetown Sports Information

The New England Revolution selected Steve Neumann with the fourth pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. Neumann gives the Revolution a striker, which was the expectation, but most thought they would take Patrick Mullins.

There was some confusion ahead of the pick, with Jay Heaps telling Taylor Twellman that they would trade back to No. 5 in exchange for allocation money, but that never came to fruition. Instead, the Revolution kept the pick, likely because they had targeted Neumann and thought that if they allowed FC Dallas to move up to No. 4, the Hoops would take Neumann.

The question for the Revs is where they will play Neumann. He is outstanding technically and a very creative player, leading some to believe he is best in the midfield, but he has spent most of his career at forward. New England has solid players in both the midfield -- Kelyn Rowe and Lee Nguyen -- and up front -- Saer Sene and Charlie Davies -- but they could use additional depth at both so he could play him at either position.
