Real Betis hire Gabriel Calderón as team’s third head coach of the season

The former Betis player and Saudi Arabia manager has been tasked with saving the team from relegation

Real Betis wasted little time in announcing Gabriel Calderón as the team's new head coach in the wake of the firing of Juan Carlos Garrido. Calderón is a former Betis player and is the team's third head coach this season. Calderón's contract is through the end of the season with an option for another year.

The new manager was introduced at a press conference on Monday and is now tasked with trying to save Real Betis’ season. The team has only won two leagues games this season and currently dead last in La Liga, eight points behind Almeria in 17th.

The new head coach sounded confident talking to the media and expressed the belief that Betis could avoid relegation.

“If it was any old club this situation would be impossible, but not at Betis. We have 18 cup finals and we don’t need to do any sums other than that. We have to stick together. I’ve come here to give everything I have and I’m not a loser. We have to give everything for the club, and we have to leave any personal quarrels to one side.”

Calderón has coach French side Caen, Swiss club Laussanne-Sport and several club teams in the Middle East. He spent one year in charge of the Saudi Arabian national team, helping them qualify for the 2006 World Cup.

He played for Betis from from 1983 to 1987 and twice represented Argentina in the World Cup.
