Jonas Gutierrez has cancer and still ran a marathon for charity

Matthew Lewis

Jonas Gutierrez was recently diagnosed with testicular cancer and yet, on Sunday, he ran a marathon in his home country of Argentina. And he did it to raise money for the cancer charity FUCA.

Running more than 26 miles is incredibly difficult in the most ideal of circumstances, but doing so while undergoing chemotherapy seems impossible. Gutierrez proved it wasn’t though, running the entire race while wearing a shirt with an anti-cancer message in invisible ink that became fully clear by the end of the race.

“Thank you very much to all the participants of the Buenos Aires Marathon 42k for their support and encouragement during the race,” Gutierrez tweeted in Spanish.

Gutierrez’s race came after Argentina held a banner that read “Strength Jonas” before a match against Brazil over the weekend.

Luckily, Gutierrez’s prognosis is good, but he is still in the middle of a cancer battle and yet he is out there running a marathon. The man is amazing. Hopefully we will see him cancer-free and playing for Newcastle again soon.
