Manchester City vs. Newcastle United live stream: How to watch the League Cup online

Stuttering Manchester City welcome a resurgent Newcastle United to the Etihad in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.

Richard Heathcote

Newcastle United will look to continue the momentum they've built up with a couple of consecutive Premier League victories away at Manchester City in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday. The Magpies' crisis under Alan Pardew seems to have come to an end, and now it seems they have a genuine chance of causing problems for a City team who head into this game on the back of a stunning defeat away at West Ham United in the Premier League.

However, City will no doubt be eager to use this match to bounce back from their recent rocky form. Manuel Pellegrini's side lifted this trophy last season, and they're one of the favourites to win it this time around. What's more, their form at the Etihad has tended to be pretty good so far this season, with only Stoke having won away at the Citizens.

Key player - Stevan Jovetić (Manchester City)

It’s likely that Manuel Pellegrini will use this match to rotate his striking options, which could offer an opportunity for Montenegrin forward Stevan Jovetić. The former Fiorentina man didn’t have a great start to life at City, with injuries preventing him from ever really getting a run in the first team. However, when he’s played this season he’s looked much sharper, and he could well cause problems for the Magpies defence.

Key matchup - Newcastle's defence vs. their early season form

Newcastle’s defence this season has undoubtedly been their problem area, with Fabio Coloccini in particular having looked a liability at centre-back. However, they’ve managed to look much more solid over the last couple of matches, and if they maintain their recent level of performance, they have a chance of recording a victory and squeezing through into the next round.

Manchester City injuries and suspensions

Out: Frank Lampard (thigh). In doubt: None.

Newcastle United injuries and suspensions

Out: Davide Santon (knee), Rolando Aarons (hamstring), Siem de Jong (thigh), Cheick Tioté, Mike Williamson (unspecified). In doubt: Papiss Demba Cissé (knee), Emmanuel Rivière (knock).

Manchester City's only absentee is Frank Lampard after Samir Nasri recovered from a groin injury. However, Newcastle will be without several first-team regulars including Siem de Jong, Davide Santon and Cheick Tioté, while the strike duo of Papiss Demba Cissé and Emmanuel Rivière are in doubt.
