For just the fifth time in their history, the Faroe Islands have won a competitive match, defeating Greece 1-0 in Piraeus. This is the second consecutive European Championship qualifying cycle in which they have won a match.
Faroe Islands stun Greece to notch fifth ever competitive win
It’s also their first against a significant opponent on the road.
Previously, the Faroe Islands have recorded two major wins, both at home. They upset Austria in Euro 92 qualifying and beat Estonia during qualification for the 2012 finals. They also own two competitive victories over San Marino, one of the few European countries historically worse than them, in 1996 qualifying.
Here's the stunning goal. It's not pretty, but neither is Greece's defending.
The Greeks are in an absolute tailspin. They've been a fixture in the World Cup and European Championship in recent times, but look highly unlikely to qualify for these finals in 2016. They'd taken just one point from three matches coming into this game, recording shutout losses at home against Northern Ireland and Romania, as well as a 1-1 draw away to Finland. It would be stunning if manager Claudio Ranieri kept his job through the weekend.
