Dan Kennedy one of just seven players picked in MLS Dispersal Draft

New York City FC makes the somewhat shocking selection of little-known Matthew Dunn at No. 2.

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The Chivas USA Dispersal Draft was notable mostly for what didn’t happen, as opposed to who actually got picked. FC Dallas selected goalkeeper Dan Kennedy with the No. 1 pick and just six more teams bothered to select anyone.

New York City FC made the somewhat shocking selection of Matthew Dunn at No. 2. Dunn is a 20-year-old midfielder who played for Germany’s FC Koln as a youth but made just seven appearances for Chivas USA last year.

Marco Delgado, a Homegrown Player many thought could be the top pick, fell all the way to Toronto FC at No. 14 and turned out to be the final player selected. Among the notable players not to be picked were Nigel Reo-Coker, Jhon-Kennedy Hurtado and Owaldo Minda, who was on Ecuador’s World Cup team.

The main reason so few players were selected was most likely to rules, which stipulated that teams who made a pick needed to pick up the player’s 2015 option and guarantee the contract. The unselected players will now be eligible for Stage 2 of the Re-Entry Draft or be available in the Waiver Draft, depending on their eligibility.
