Bayern Munich will be without another one of their top players for the remainder of 2014. David Alaba, who was substituted in the second half of Bayern Munich's UEFA Champions League match against Roma on Wednesday, will have knee surgery after injuring his MCL and meniscus.
David Alaba needs knee surgery, likely out through winter break
Bayern Munich will be without their do-everything, three-position wonder for a bit.

.@David_Alaba diagnosis: Partial MCL tear and medial meniscus injury. Surgery required. Set for several weeks on the sidelines. #GetWellSoon
— FC Bayern English (@FCBayernEN) November 6, 2014 Before the final diagnosis, Pep Guardiola said that Alaba was likely out "two or three months". While Bayern didn't give out a specific timetable for his return, the official diagnosis doesn't conflict Guardiola's statement.
Alaba has developed into a hyper-versatile, left-sided Philipp Lahm this season, playing a hybrid role that occasionally sees him playing central midfield, occasionally left central defense and occasionally left back. He's basically irreplaceable, and Bayern will have to make some kind of alteration to their tactics in his absence. They have plenty of decent defenders, wingbacks and midfielders, but no one who can do everything that Alaba does.
