Parma fail to pay players, get one point deducted

The crociati, bottom in Serie A, continue hurtling toward relegation.

It's not been the best six months for Parma. Despite finishing sixth last season, the crociati were unable to compete in the Europa League, thanks to an unpaid tax bill. Then injuries ravaged the side, sending Parma into a downward spiral. After losing 2-1 to Lazio at the weekend, Parma remained dead last, with just two wins and a mere six points.

Now climbing out from the bottom is going to be all the more difficult -- although it could’ve been much worse. After failing to pay wages dating back a full year, Parma have had a point deducted from their total. Perhaps the Italian Football Federation was merciful, noting that with just five points, the team is currently eight points from safety?

That bit of mercy from the FIGC aside, it’s tough to see how Parma are going to get themselves out of such a mess. With a shambolic defense and a marked tendency to fail to get the ball in the net (5-4 losses to Milan aside) it’s looking like Serie B is inevitable for this side.
