Surging Manchester United faces rapidly cooling Newcastle United on Boxing Day at Old Trafford. United are going to need some good luck to catch up with Chelsea or City, but a return to the Champions League is within reach, though they’ll likely be pushed by West Ham and Southampton.

Since their loss to Manchester City back on November 2nd, United have gone unbeaten with six wins and win draw, moving from the middle of the EPL table, all the way up to third. Louis Van Gaal will be hoping his side rebounds from a lackluster performance last weekend that saw United drop two points against Aston Villa.

After languishing near the bottom of the table for the first couple months of the season, Newcastle when on a run starting in October that saw them lose just once in nine matches. The club moved into the mid table and the rapidly increasing pressure on head coach Alan Pardew was released. The last two weeks have been tough on the Magpies with a 4-0 loss against Arsenal and a 1-0 loss to Sunderland last weekend.

Both team have heavy injury lists, with United still being thin at the outside defenders with Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw unavailable. Papiss Cissé's knee continues to be an issue and his status will likely be up in the air until game time.

Manchester United injuries and suspensions

Daley Blind (knee), Marouane Fellaini (illness), Ander Herrera (knock), Marcos Rojo (thigh), Luke Shaw (ankle). In Doubt: Jesse Lingard, Chris Smalling (match fitness).
