Borussia Dortmund vs. Hoffenheim: Time, TV schedule, and game preview

Borussia Dortmund are the story of the season in the Bundesliga. Sitting dead last through 13 matches, they would be in full blown crisis mode were it not for some stellar Champions League performances buoying their season.

On the other side, Hoffenheim were flying high for the first 10 matchdays before they came crashing back to earth, having surrendered 11 goals in their last 3 matches. While their potent attacking threats won out last week against Hannover, they'll have a tougher test against a still potent Borussia Dortmund attack.

With both teams riding into this matchday playing defensively inept soccer, this match may be the fireworks spectacular of the weekend.

Key player -- Mats Hummels

The German centerback is the tactical rock and creative force of the Dortmund backline. With Neven Subotic and Matthias Ginter turning in shocking performances the last few matchdays, die Schwarzgelben need Hummels back at his post anchoring them from deep. While Hummels' form prior to his injury left much to be desired, Dortmund still need him if they are going to break out of their current tailspin.

Key matchup -- Roberto Firmino vs. Sven Bender

Roberto Firmino is the Hoffenheim attacking talisman, as everything flows through and around him, including their goals. If Hoffenheim want to stay shot-for-shot in stride with Borussia Dortmund, they will need the Brazilian playmaker at his peak. Opposing Firmino will be most likely be Sven Bender, Dortmund's stalwart defensive midfielder. While Bender has the ability to impose himself on Firmino, he has been stretched and exposed in recent matches while covering for an inept backline. How much focus he can bring to bear in shutting down Firmino will have a huge impact on the match.

Out: Keon Casteels (fitness), Adam Szalai (red card)

With Borussia Dortmund missing their best attacking midfielder and a starting centerback, it's no surprise they've struggled recently. While they have the depth to make up for it, the constant rotation has been an issue and it's likely that will continue to rear its head in this match. For Hoffenheim, the loss of Adam Szalai to red card suspension limits their bench options at striker, likely ensuring that Anthony Modeste plays the entire match.
