Arsenal vs. Manchester United: Final score 0-0, not much going on

Instead of one of them bouncing back from a bad weekend, Arsenal and Manchester United looked scared to do much of anything and together put on a poor match.

Manchester United and Arsenal both picked very attacking teams on Wednesday, with both sides in need of a win, but neither looked particularly impressive going forward. Each goalkeeper was forced into some work late, but the opening 75 minutes of the match were poor, and a 0-0 draw was a just result.

Early on, it appeared like neutrals were going to be in for a treat. Robin van Persie had an excellent chance in the second minute off a giveaway by Mikel Arteta, but put his shot right into the stomach of Wojciech Szczesny. Two minutes later, Arsenal had a pair of good chances, but failed to capitalize on both. Jack Wilshere had a shot blocked out for a corner, and Olivier Giroud missed an open header on the ensuing set piece.

After that, very little happened, besides Rafael picking up an injury around the half-hour mark. He finished the first half, but was replaced by Rio Ferdinand at the break.

Business started to pick up a bit in the 62nd minute when Laurent Koscielny had a header cleared off the line, but things didn't really start opening up until the 77th minute, when Giroud whiffed on what should have been a tap-in from a cross by Bacary Sanga.

David de Gea and Wojciech Szczesny traded spectacular saves late, keeping the score level. Szczesny pushed a van Persie header that looked destined to the back of the net off the crossbar, thwarting an excellent United counter. Five minutes later, de Gea matched him, making a brilliant stop on Santi Cazorla.

Ultimately, that was the best either team had to offer, and the Emirates Stadium crowd booed the teams off the pitch.
