'The magic of the cup' is a cheesy phrase, but it's still working for Wigan. Sunderland seem to be pretty good at this cup competition thing too. Oh, and why did we take a whole weekend for this, again?

Things continue to go well in cups for Wigan and Sunderland.
Sunderland 1-0 Southampton
Craig Gardner’s 25-yard stunner off the underside of the crossbar was one of the only significant events in this poor contest. Rickie Lambert had an excellent chance to equalize late in the second half when he found himself with the ball at his foot and an empty net at his mercy from six yards, but he let the ball bounce up on him and put his shot over the bar.

Could the Latics be headed for a repeat? They took out a Premier League team for the second straight round, beating Cardiff away to seal a trip to the quarterfinals. Chris McCann opened the scoring, finishing from 10 yards in the 18th minute after Jordi Gomez found him with a nice cutback pass. Frazier Campbell answered in the 27th minute, cleaning up a bouncing ball in the box, but the visitors struck back before the halftime whistle.
The winner came on a great strike, but Cardiff made it as easy as possible for Ben Watson. On a free kick from 30 yards, they only put a two-man wall in front of Watson and they didn't stick together. David Marshall was screened when the shot came flying in, but he might not have had a chance even if he saw it all the way. It went flying perfectly into the side of the net.
